There are two types of ferrochrome - high carbon and low carbon - and both have unique properties and benefits. High carbon ferrochrome contains between 4-8% carbon and is the most commonly used type of ferrochrome. Low carbon ferrochrome, on the other hand, contains less than 0.5% carbon and is used as a supplement to high carbon ferrochrome.
The production process for low carbon ferrochrome, on the other hand, is more complex and involves the use of a two-stage process. The first stage involves the reduction of chromite ore with silicon in a submerged electric arc furnace, producing a high silicon, low carbon ferrochrome alloy. This alloy is then treated with oxygen in a refining furnace, which removes the excess silicon and lowers the carbon content to the desired level.
